The Pershing County baseball team played three tight games against Sierra Lutheran last week. They won or lost each of them by one-point margins. On Tuesday Pershing County beat the visiting Falcons (9-8).

Pershing County finished the series in Carson City with a win (5-4) and a loss (3-2).

The Mustangs improved to 8-16 overall and 5-16 in the Northern 2A.

“We played a tough series,” said coach Jared Jensen.

Trenton Rhodes, Conner Fecht, Tyler Miller, Ayden Montes and Brian Flores strategize before an inning at last Tuesday’s game against SLHS, hosted by Pershing County.

Pershing County jumped out to an early lead in the first game. The Falcons had a big fourth inning with five runs but the Mustangs successfully fought off their comeback in front of an energized home crowd. The wind kicked up the dust.

In Saturday’s opener in Carson, it was Pershing County’s turn for a comeback.

The Mustangs were down 4-1 in the seventh inning but scored four unanswered runs to clinch the win.

The coach cites stellar pitching from Ayden Montes and Trenton Rhodes. Montes was also 3-for-4 at the plate. Rhodes was 2-for-4. The sophomore teammates tore up the bases.

In the last game of the series, nobody scored until the third inning. Pershing County struggled to battle back from a 3-1 deficit and added another run in the fifth inning but it wasn’t enough.

.Aaron Kienbaum speaks with coach Jayce Montes on first-base.

“We played well defensively and pitched tough. The thing about the league this year is that the top down has been extremely competitive. We’ve had teams pull away when it comes to wins and losses but there isn’t a team this year you could look at and say, ‘This is going to be an easy 3-game series,’” said Jensen.

“It was nice to see us compete hard for a good series win. Hopefully we can close out this week for Pershing County’s first ten-win season since 2016.”

On Tuesday, April 30, Pershing County traveled to Silver Springs to play the Silver Stage Nighthawks (2-18).

Results were not available at press time.

On Saturday, Pershing County hosts Silver Stage for the last two games of the series.

They play the senior day games at 10 a.m. and noon. Teammates, coaches, families and fans will say farewell to Conner Fecht and Aaron Kienbaum.
