Esquivel claims low medalist honors at Elko

The Northern 3A boys golf season is in full force now and returned to the course in Spring Creek and Elko last week.

The league stopped at Spring Creek Golf Course on Monday, April 22, with the Buckaroos finishing eighth as a team with a score of 375

Once again, the final team standings were close, with Churchill County winning the tournament with 335, with Truckee (344) and Fernley (345) finishing a close second and third, respectfully.

Elko placed fourth with a 348 and Spring Creek (355), South Tahoe (365) and North Valleys (377) were fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. 

Fernley’s Jacob Holmes and Churchill County’s Dierks Hammon each shot 78 to tie for the low round of the day. 

South Tahoe’s Johnny Womack finished third with a round of 80 and Lowry’s Landon Esquivel and Truckee’s Luke Brown tied for fourth with scores of 84.

Maddex Hislop earned a top-10 finish, as he carded an 84 for the Buckaroos, with Jack Olson and Landon Tangreen shooting 104 and 105. 

John Boyle (112) and Jack DeLong (114) rounded out the scores for Lowry.


Esquivel takes top honors at Elko; Lowry finishes sixth as a team

For the first time this season in six tournament a team not named Churchill County won the team title. Elko claimed the title on Tuesday, April 23, at Ruby View Golf Course with a total of 315. 

That is also the best team score of the year.

Fernley shot a 324 to finish second, with Churchill County a shot behind at 325.  

Truckee (329) and South Tahoe (344) rounded out the top five and Lowry (349) and Spring Creek (358) were sixth and seventh, respectfully.

The Buckaroos’ Esquivel was the low medalist with an impressive round of 1-over 73. 

Elko’s Kaleb Neilson was a shot back in second at 74 and Churchill County’s Colin Shishido (78) finished third. 

Lowry had four players break 100, with Hislop carding a round of 88. Tangreen finished with a 92, followed by Jack DeLong and Jack Olson (98). John Boyle finished with a 103.

The Northern 3A doesn’t have regional postseason tournament and the top three teams from the final regular season point standings advance to the state tournament.

Churchill County leads the Northern 3A with 58 points, followed by Fernley (50.5) and Elko (49.5). Truckee is fourth with 45 points and South Tahoe (33.5) and Lowry (27.5) are fifth and sixth, respectfully.

The Northern 3A regular season closes with trips to South Tahoe on May 6 and Reno and Sierra Sage Golf Course in Reno on May 7.

The NIAA State Championships will take place May 14-15 in Pahrump.
