Lowry track and field turns in strong performances at Fernley Invitational


Before the Fernley Invitational ended early due to high winds and a power outage, a number of Lowry High School track and field athletes had outstanding days.

Freshmen Ava Swensen and Alyla Thomas paced a 2-3 finish in the 800 meters with personal bests for the girls. Swensen stopped the watch at 2 minutes, 40.58 seconds and Thomas was not far behind at 2:44.22.

The duo switched spots in the 1,600 meters, with Thomas placing third in a time of 5:58.21 and Swensen fourth at 6:00.43.

Kepa Hilbish led Lowry with four girls in the top 11 in the 100-meter dash. Hilbish placed third in a time of 13.74, folly Kaitlin Messmer (14.25) in fifth. Tariana Weatherspoon (14,54) finished ninth and Violet Amato (14.67) finished 11th.

Sophomore Kiana Head placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:06.76) and Brooklyn Swensen placed fifth in the 800 meters with a personal best time of 2:53.12 and the junior was seventh in the 1,600 meters (6:31.77).

Senior Mackenzie Chiaratti finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles and 12th in the 300-meter hurdles (1:04.37). 

The 4x100 and 4x200 relays each placed second.

On the boys side, senior Rojelio Leon notched a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.14 and sophomore teammate Cody Allen set a personal best at 12.34 to place 10th.

Freshmen Cooper Hoagland finished 11th in both the 110-meter hurdles (22.27) and the 300-meter hurdles (51.70). His time in th3 300 hurdles was a personal best. 

Kolby Hoagland placed 18th in the 1,600 meters and Anthony Martinez set a personal best in the 400 meters at 1:01.17 to place 18th.

Lowry travels to Reno and North Valleys High School on Friday for the 3A JV championships.

Another group heads to Truckee on Saturday.
