Longhorn track and field sweep team titles at Eureka Invitational


The Battle Mountain High School track and team rolled to the team titles at Friday’s Eureka Invitational with a number of strong individual performances.

Battle Mountain senior Andy Wall swept the top spot in both hurdle events, setting personal bests in both. 

He stopped the watch at 16.4 in the 100-meter hurdles and 45.8 in the 300-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Joey Smith collected a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.4, a personal best and Ben George placed second in the discus with a toss of 108 feet, 6 inches.

Blake Stuart earned a pair of runner-up finishes in the high jump (5-8) and the long jump (18-8). The senior set a season best in the triple jump at 37-7.5 to place third.

Andres Molina placed fourth in both the shot put with a throw of 36-7 discus (101) and Alex Wall (5-2), Chase Lutz (5-0) and Zayne Hall (4-10) were fifth, seventh and ninth in the high jump. 

For Lutz, it was a personal best. In addition, Hall placed seventh in the 200 meters and Alex Wall was 16th.

Elias Goodman (11.6) and Brodie Smith (12.2) set personal bests in the 100-meter dash to finish fourth and eighth, respectively.

Eli Colver and Wyatt Madalena were sixth and ninth in the 400 meters, with Colver placing eighth in the 1,600 meters in a time of 5:52.4.

The 4x400 relay of Zayne Hall, Wyatt Madalena, Eli Colver and Isaac Martinez won with a time of 4:06.6. 

The 4x100 relay of Blake Stuart, Elias Goodman, Chase Lutz and Isaac Martinez won as well in a time of 47.3.

The Lady Longhorns swept first-place in all four of the relays. The foursome of Hailee Cook, Lindsey Bleak, Taylor Clark and Lisette Haney won with a time of 56.9. Kendall Mudd, Clark, Tessa Ostler and Cook won the 4z200 relay at 2:03.5.

The 4x400 relay stopped the watch at 5:16.6 and includes Yaritza Vazquez, Andrea Alcaraz-Lopez, Addison Payzant and Ostler. The 4x800 relay of Donja Sherve, Ostler, Juliet LaRiva and Violet Peterson finished with a time of 13.21.

Sherve won the 3,200 meters for the Lady Longhorns in a time of 17:13.7 and was sixth in the 1,600 meters (7:42). LaRiva finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 3:22.8 and fifth in the 1,600 meters (7:41.5). 

Battle Mountain had three girls finish in the top five in the shot put, led by senior Olivia Lemarie who finished second at 28-9.5.

Fellow seniors Jenna Chopp (28-9) and Divine Jacobson (25-4.5) were third and fifth. In the discus, Lemaire placed eighth with a throw of 70-5 and Chopp set a personal best at 67-7 to place ninth.

Bleak added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 28-4, while Cook was sixth in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 13-1. Alcaraz-Lopez placed eighth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 3-0.  

Taylor Clark (13.8), Cook (14.1), Vazquez (14.3) and Bleak (14-4) led a second through fifth-place finish in the 100 meters. 

Clark and Mudd tied for fourth in the 200 meters with times of 29.7, Ostler weas seventh at 30.3 and Payzant placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time for 1:14.7.

Battle Mountain is scheduled to travel to Lovelock and Spring Creek on Friday.
