Pershing County has some3 fun before the doubleheader with Battle Mountain.

The Pershing County softball team maintained its perfect record this past weekend after competing against the Battle Mountain Longhorns on the road.

The Mustangs beat their rival school 11-1 in the opener and 16-4 in the closing game. They are 3-0 against the Longhorns for the season, having won (1-0) at home on April 2.

It was a good weekend for home runs. Aaliyah Allen hit one in the opener. Seniors Anna Happy and Taylor Garland each hit another in the closer. It was Garland’s first since her sophomore year. “Finally!” she said.

Pershing County's Riley Harvey throws out a runner.

“I can’t ask for anything better than three home runs over two games. Our girls crushed the ball,” said coach Jordan McKinney.

The Mustangs jumped out with three runs in the first inning of the opener and kept up the momentum throughout the game. Meanwhile, they held the Longhorns to only one run in the sixth inning.

Anna Happy went 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs, a triple and an RBI. Yasmine McKinney went 3-for-4.

Allen went 2-for-4 and had the home run. Garland handled the pitching.

Raegan Burrows pitched three innings in the closer. The PCHS junior gave up one earned run off one hit.

Mady Grenz went 2-for-4, with four RBI, two runs and two doubles. She has a habit of getting hits right when the Mustangs need them.

“Yasmine (McKinney) has been hitting consistently well. Kyra (Cerini) got some timely hits and Raegan (Burrows) had two great games at the bat,” McKinney said. “After only winning 1-0 the first time, the girls came out hungry and ready to play. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

McKinney and the girls helped out at Saturday’s track meet in Lovelock. Excitement was in the air. In a few hours they’d be at the prom.

The girls catch a short break between games. They travel to Silver Springs to play the Silver Stage Nighthawks on April 30. On May 4 they’re back in Lovelock for senior day.

It will be an emotion-packed day for the close-knit team.

They’ll say farewell to Yasmine McKinney, Miya Gallagher, Madyson Grenz, Kayla Hanley, Anna Happy and Taylor Garland.

The girls have supported one another on athletic fields and courts for years.

This year the volleyball, basketball and, now the softball team have competed at or near the top with a State trophy within their grasp.
